Winter’s coming

Such a beautiful day today. No wind and cold. The sunset bounces purple and blue off the eastern sky as it slips below my line of sight to the west.

I feel like a country woman today for sure as I needed assistance in removing some beets from the ground. Way more frozen than on Saturday when temperatures were only in the 40s. What a difference a few days make.

It gets dark early these days. We have a fire in the stove and food to eat. Unlike our grandmothers and great-grandmothers who may have been looking into winter from a hole in ground covered with the wagon box. Can you imagine? How can it be that in 100 years things have changed so drastically? Now we take for granted that everything we need will be at the supermarket, big box store or streaming through an unseen messenger in the sky called the Internet.

As we scraped away that frozen soil and as the beets grew white with frost in my kitchen sink, I can only be thankful that we have such easy lives – and yet we are so discontent….

Never let the day go by without breathing in the outside air … such a miracle is the wind, the moon, the earth, that I cannot seem to find the words to express those moments as the night closes in.
