Happy Thanksgiving

Many of you have been organizing your kitchen in preparation for the upcoming day of feasting…. Thanksgiving. Lots of turkey, potatoes and green beans will be passed from hand to hand around tables of families and friends.

I called my mother to see if she needed me to bring anything. I know the answer will be no, it’s always no because we all love to cook. Like many Germans from Russia, food will be plentiful because we always like to be prepared for that extra guest we welcome to our tables. But she did say this to me. “If you want pumpkin pie, you have to bring that yourself.”

No, we are not passing up dessert – rather she decided to make pumpkin blachinda instead. Oh yeah, like I am going to eat pumpkin pie when I can have a sweet spicy blachinda instead.

The next best thing that happened last week was Barbara Cook wrote me this note.

I hope this comes through alright for you.  You will notice at the end there are references to UK weights and measures.  This is because Frances has British in-laws and many friends scattered around England and Scotland.

The recipe is from Mary (Eberle) Feist, daughter of John and Margaret (Fischer) Eberle of the Hague/Strasburg area of Emmons county.  John and Margaret had 14 children, and the 13th child was my father, Claude.

I hope you can use this.  I will try to locate the recipe card that Aunt Mary wrote up for me.  I am looking forward to seeing the finished book.”

Just know that our upcoming book projects will be consistent in spelling but include a list of common spellings for German food.

    Oh, yay! I’m so pleased to see you’ve linked to my blog! I am now back living in Scotland getting ready to make Thanksgiving dinner for my Scottish friends–and have even had a recent conversation about making blagenda! (I think I’ll have to search for a pumpkin now. Or maybe a butternut squash will work if nothing else!)

      Be assured that squash will make those babies tastier than pumpkin. Only a few breeds of pumpkin have as much flavor as squash, I always use squash and forgot to mention that… so happy baking and thanks for your support. Sue
